Made his directorial debut with the 1975 sci-fi/horror hybrid Shivers , for which he won Best Director at the Sitges–Catalonian International Film Festival. Declined offers to direct several movies that went on to become big hits, including Flashdance (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and Top Gun (1986).
